How the Race Unfolded.
A light south easterly became a light north easterly on the way out to Pomonal but remained fairly light on the return journey, not slowing the riders to any great degree.
Limit riders Clarke and Grellet made the turn about one minute thirty seconds ahead of the second limit pair of Collier and McIntyre, who had ridden hard to make up much of their 5 minute deficit.
The second scratch riders Parnaby and Monaghan turned next 2 minutes later, with Monaghan showing unexpectedly impressive form after an absence of 4 months off the bike. This unexpected good form had them still leading scratch by 5 minutes at the turn, leaving scratch with little hope of catching them.
On the return journey, the second limit riders caught the limit riders with about 11km to go, just before the first main hill, with the two groups staying together for the next couple of kilometres until the limit riders dropped off with about 7km to go.
The second scratch riders had to work hard to reel in the second limit riders, but finally caught them just before the tip, with about 4km to go. Both groups remained together briefly until McIntyre dropped off. Parnaby attacked on the final short hill and quickly opened up a break, managing to stay away from the chasing Monaghan and Collier until the finish. Danny Monaghan was second with Jen Collier third.
Frank Kean took out race fastest time ahead of Peter Wemyss.
