How the Race Unfolded.
The morning was quite cool, with a light breeze just east of north, but it was enough to make a noticeable difference to the riders speed.
Out to the turn at the 25.5km mark, the limit riders Mayo and Grellet had done well into the head wind, averaging 29kph, but the second scratch riders had cut their lead to just under 3 minutes at the turn.
Further back the scratch riders were down a little on expected time, and turned about 3 minutes 45 sec behind second scratch.
On the 18km return journey, the second scratch riders caught the limit riders about 2km before McCrackens Hill, with about 9km to go. The second scratch riders went on to win the Dean Hayward showing a good turn of speed to finish well clear of Peter Parnaby, with Drew Heard not far behind.
