How the Race Unfolded.
A light but shifting wind greeted the small field for the out and back Stawell Racecourse event.
Limit riders Les Dunn, Kevin Grellet and John McIntyre proved a much better combination than the handicappers had anticipated, and were up on their expected time at the half way turn point just short of Pomonal.
Peter Parnaby and Tony Lloyd were well matched but were down on the limit riders but evenly paced compared to the scratch riders at the turn.
On the return journey back to Stawell, the hoped for tail wind rarely appeared, and the chasing two bunches ended up still two minutes behind the limit riders, who in the end averaged nearly a whole kilometer per hour over handicap expectations.
Les Dunn took out the sprint from John McIntyre and Kevin Grellet.
The mid field riders Lloyd and Parnaby finished just under 2 minutes later with scratch hot on their wheels, finishing only a few seconds later.
Peter Wemyss recorded fastest race time.
