How the Race Unfolded.
A side to tail wind blew the riders out to Greens Creek, then they met a side head to side tail across to Campbells Bridge, where the limit riders were going well and looked like they would romp it home. At this point they still had a lead of 3 minutes 45 seconds over the second limit riders. However the last leg home was into a strong southerly wind, making for a hard slog for all the bunches.
By Campbells Bridge the second scratch and scratch riders had combined but were still 9 minutes behind limit, but worked hard into the wind, and with a numerical advantage were making up a lot of time.
On the last long climb into Stawell, the limit riders looked to have enough of a lead to hold on to win, which they did. Kevin Grellet took out the win from Peter Mayo, with Meg Parnaby 1 minute behind the winner. Frank Kean took fourth place having just missed Meg Parnaby by a mere 6 seconds after scratch flew up the final hill.
Frank Kean recorded fastest race time.
