How the Race Unfolded.
A cold sunny morning with very lights winds greeted riders, but they soon warmed up with the hilly start to the ride out to Pomonal. Limit riders Mayo and Grellet took a while to get going, averaging 28.5kph on the outward journey, and then upped the pace a little on the homeward leg averaging 28.7kph to the finish.
However, the 5 minute riders proved the most consistent on the day, averaging 34.95kph on the outward leg and maintaining the speed to the finish, overtaking the limit riders with about 6 or 7kms to go.
The scratch riders were a little down at the turn, with Malcolm Hayes breaking the fastening strap on his shoe 15 seconds before the start, and riding the race with one floppy foot! They averaged 37.1kph to the turn, but slowed a little on the return journey to average 36.85kph and finish about 1 minute 15 seconds behind the winners.
Drew Heard was way too strong for Peter Parnaby and Dean Hayward in the final sprint, with the three riders finishing in that order. Peter Wemyss took out fastest race time ahead of Malcolm Hayes.
