How the Race Unfolded.
A south south easterly gave the riders a helping hand from across the back of the course, but the last stretch from Campbells Bridge into Stawell was a head win.
Limit rider Mayo and Grellet set a good pace to the 35.5km mark at Campbells Bridge, averaging 31.17kph but slowed considerably like all the the other bunches once they turned back towards Stawell, into the head wind.
The second limit riders averaged just over 34kph to Campbells Bridge, and with the advantage of 4 against 2 into the head wind, managed to catch the limit riders with about 5km to go.
Further back the second scratch riders had averaged 37.09kph to Campbells Bridge, and were still about 2 and a half minutes in front of scratch, who had averaged 40.63kph to the turn.
Up the long hill into Stawell, second scratch caught the combined limit bunches with about 1km to go, and went on to hold off scratch by 50 seconds.
The in form Malcolm Hayes had no problems taking out the sprint from Dean Hayward and Drew Heard. Frank Kean took fastest time from Sean Prins.
