How the Race Unfolded.
A tail wind made the first half of the race out to Greens Creek and then across to Campbells Bridge fast, with all bunches recording very good averages.

Limit riders were only about 35 seconds in front of second limit at the Campbells Bridge turn, 35.5km into the race, after stopping to free a foreign body from Peter Mayo's chain. Second limit were riding well, and still had a lead of one and a half minutes over Peter Parnaby and Dean Hayward, who had worked hard to this point.

Second scratch were a further 5 minutes back followed by scratch another 2 minutes behind, with both bunches struggling to pull in the leading riders, made worse by one scratch rider missing the start and having to rejoin the bunch 10km down the road.

Second limit caught the limit riders about 2 kilometres after the Campbells Bridge turn, and were about 300 metres in front of Peter Parnaby and Dean Hayward, but the decent head wind was acting to level the bunches to a fair extent, and it took until well onto the last climb into Stawell for them to finally catch the main combined limit bunch. However, by then, Meg Parnaby and Kevin Grellet were a further 30 meters up the hill. By this stage Dean Hayward was done in, and it took a tired Peter Parnaby until the top of the hill into Stawell to catch the two leading riders.

Meg Parnaby went on to win the race from Peter Parnaby and Kevin Grellet. Frank Kean recorded fastest race time of 1hr 24min 2sec.
