How the Race Unfolded.
A fairly strong southerly gave the riders varying amounts of assistance on the first leg out to Greens Creek and then across to Campbells Bridge, resulting in some good averages to that point.
Kevin Grellet was first to arrive at Campbells Bridge, 35.5km into the race, and had averaged 28.24kph. He had about an 11 minute lead on Parnaby and Barnett, who had averaged 33.89kph to that point. They in turn were a bit under 3 minutes still in front of second scratch, who had averaged 38.32kph to the turn at Campbells Bridge. Scratch had averaged 41.29kph and were a further 2 minutes 30 seconds behind.
However, the last leg back to Stawell was into a strong head wind. Grellet's 11 minute lead was reduced to about 45 seconds at the start of the climb up the last hill into Stawell, with Parnaby and Barnett getting caught by second scratch part way up the climb with 1.8km to go. Scratch was only about 300 metres behind and coming fast.
At the start of Moonlight St, with 800m to go, Grellet was caught by the second scratch pair of Heard and Monaghan, who went on to win with Monaghan crossing the line ahead of Heard. Frank Kean was next only 8 seconds off the win, taking out fastest time from fourth placed Steve Monks.
