How the Race Unfolded.
All bunches set off at a solid pace into the mostly head wind on the leg out to Greens Creek, before turning across towards Campbells Bridge, where the wind became a side to tail wind at times.

Half way between Greens Creek and Campbells bridge, all the bunches were looking to be doing well, with no bunch having got the upper hand at this stage.

At the Campbells Bridge turn, the limit riders had averaged 28.6kph, with second limit riders Meg Parnaby and John McIntyre only a minute and a half behind, having averaged 30.46kph.

Second scratch was a further four minutes behind, having averaged 35.25kph to that point, with scratch a minute 20 seconds behind second scratch, averaging 37.86kph.

On the leg back to Stawell, scratch caught second scratch with about 5.5km to go. Soon after, second limit caught limit at the start of the last hill into Stawell, with about a kilometre and a half to go.

Scratch made up a lot a ground over the last few kilometres, and reeled in the entire field, catching Meg Parnaby, the only remaining rider out front with only about 600 metres to go.

At this point the field was down to Frank Kean and Peter Wemyss, with Malcolm Hayes just hanging on and Edwin Irvine just off the back.

Up the remainder of the hill, Frank Kean was too good for the other riders, riding away to finished 30 metres in front of Peter Wemyss, with Malcolm Hayes crossing third ahead of Edwin Irvine.
