How the Race Unfolded.
Early fog, cool temperatures and very light winds set the scene for the 40.5km race from Stawell out to Pomonal and back.
John McIntyre and Kevin Grellet set off well but the out of form Grellet didn't quite last to Pomonal when McIntyre set off by himself and turned a minute down on expected time on the rest of the field.
Second scratch riders Hayward and Heard were doing well and turned at the halfway point with a 10 second advantage over scratch.
On the return journey scratch was slowed slightly with a kangaroo bounding along the side of the road, and perhaps lost 5 or 7 seconds, but then continued their pursuit of the riders ahead.
With about 7km to go, nearing the Black Range, Heard and Hayward still had a considerable lead, and over the top of the first hill caught McIntyre with about 5km to go. With about 2km to go they still had about a 400m lead, but scratch was coming fast.
Into the final straight Heard sprinted clear of Hayward, going on to take out the race, with Hayward crossing the line second not far ahead of scratch powerhouse Shaun Blackie, who finished 9 seconds after Heard, and took out fastest race time.
Drew Heard - 1 hour 13 minutes 13 seconds
Average speed of 33.2kph
Shaun Blackie - 1 hour 2 minutes 22 seconds
Average speed of 38.9kph
