How the Race Unfolded.
Limit riders Kevin Grellet and Peter Mayo rode their best pace in many weeks, and had averaged 27.35km to the Campbells Bridge turn at 35.5km into the race. At this point they still had a big margin over second limit riders Meg Parnaby, John McIntyre and Dean Hayward, who was coming back from illness, and struggled in the later stages of the race.
Second scratch was also having a bad day, with Drew Heard suffering from a bad back, resulting in the pair being caught about 30km into the race by scratch, who were going well, averaging 37.8kph to the Campbells Bridge turn.
However, the last leg from Campbells Bridge back to Stawell was a tail wind, giving the advantage to the limit riders over scratch, with Mayo and Grellet climbing up the hill into Stawell in record time, winning by several minutes over scratch.
Grellet took out the race from Mayo, with Frank Kean taking out the fastest race time from Peter Wemyss, in a time of 1 hour 20 minutes and 17 seconds, an average speed of 37.7kph.
Kevin Grellet - 1 hour 50 minutes 36 seconds
