How the Race Unfolded.
A fairly strong west south westerly made racing conditions tough, giving riders a slight advantage on the leg out to the turn, a few kilometers short of Landsborough West, but the return journey was mostly some variation of head wind.

To the turn at the 25km mark, limit riders Lumley and Grellet averaged 30.6kph, followed by second limit who averaged 33.6kph. The second scratch bunch averaged 36.1kph followed by scratch who averaged a very fast 40.9kph.

At this point of the race, the second limit riders looked to have a slight upper hand, but scratch had an extra rider into the head wind on the way back, and would also make up a lot of ground on the long climb back into Stawell.

On the return journey the two limit riders were caught by the second limit riders at the start of the first long hill, and managed to get onto the bunch, surviving most of the way to the finish.

The second scratch bunch found the return journey into the head wind very tough going, with Danny Monaghan pulling some big turns but the out of form riders Peter Parnaby and Dean Hayward soon hit the wall and struggled to offer much support. They were caught by scratch over the second long hill heading back to Stawell, with about 9km to go.

At this point it was scratch chasing second limit, who still had a big lead and were well out of sight of scratch. It wasn't until the last kilometer that scratch finally caught sight of the limit riders further up the hill, and not until the second limit riders were on Big Hill that they finally caught them.

John McIntyre turned first onto the approx 300m Big Hill climb, closely followed by Meg Parnaby, but they were only a short distance up the climb when Steve Richards and Frank Kean flashed past. Richards went on to win by 5 seconds from Kean, with Meg Parnaby overtaking McIntyre for third, a further 24 seconds behind. John McIntyre was 4th 10 seconds behind Parnaby with Alan Barnett 5th another 5 seconds later.
