How the Race Unfolded.
The trip from Stawell Race Course out to the turn at Pomonal was into a medium strength head wind, and made for a hard slog. Limit riders were down a bit on expected time at the turn, and second limit riders Parnaby and McIntyre were up about a minute on limit, but the next group of Heard and Leahy were well ahead of time, and looked to be the best chance of taking out the race after the second scratch riders had only made up a minute on them, and scratch was slightly down on second scratch.

On the trip back to Stawell, the Heard and Leahy pair continued there charge and caught the second limit riders with 3.5km to go, then the limit riders with 2.5km to go. With second scratch and scratch still not a danger, Leahy went on to take out a well earned win from Heard, with John McIntyre coming in for third ahead of the limit pair.

Peter Wemyss took out the fastest race time from Frank Kean, in a time of 1 hour 5 minutes and 5 seconds, an average speed of 37.15kph.
