How the Race Unfolded.
The long cold wet winter resulted in many riders not doing much on the bike, and combined with quite a few being either overseas, having been overseas, or recuperating from some thing or other, meant that only a small field of riders of mostly unknown form turned up for the Stawell Campbells Bridge handicap.

Meg Parnaby and Les Dunn headed off on limit, and maintained a pretty constant speed of just over 31kph, followed by the middle bunch, who proved to be in better form than they claimed before the race!! They managed to average in the low to mid 36kphs for most of the race, and made it very difficult for the two out of form scratch riders to make up much time at all.

At the Campbells Bridge turn with 15km to go, the limit riders still had a lead of about 4 minutes over the middle bunch, with the scratch riders only having made up about 15 seconds.

The limit riders were caught by the middle bunch at the bottom of the final hills into Stawell, with 1.8km to go, before Edwin Irvine got away up the last hill to win from Dean Hayward and Wayne Klauss.
