How the Race Unfolded.
The day was idea with warm temperatures but virtually no wind. Lone limit rider Peter Mayo was first off and made it to the turn point at 25.5km with an average of 26.88kph. He was still 4 minutes in front of Meg Parnaby, who, although down on form, had put in a good ride to average 29.8kph.
The two second scratch riders were also making good time, averaging 34.5kph to the turn, and were only two minutes behind Meg Parnaby, who they caught on the return journey soon after the Sandbar hill.
Scratch were also going well averaging 39.39kph to the turn and only three and a half minutes behind second scratch, and looking like they would reel them in close to the finish.
However scrath slowed a little on the return journey, while the second scratch riders maintained their pace, and with 2 kilometers to go scratch were still about a hundred and fifty meters behind. At this point Edwin Irvine made a break for the line, and got to within 800 meters before he was caught by scratch.
Frank Kean got the jump in the sprint after Wayne Klauss provided a lead out, and Kean crossed the a clear winner ahead of Irvine and Steve Monks.
