How the Race Unfolded.
With a strong south south easterly blowing, the first two legs out to Greens Creek and back across to Campbells Bridge were fairly fast, with limit averaging just over 32kph to Campbells Bridge, about 5 minutes ahead of second limit, who at that stage had averaged 36.1kph. Another 2 minutes back, second scratch had averaged 37.7kph, still one and a half minutes in front of scratch, who averaged 41.83kph to this point.

But then the final 15 kilometres home was into a fairly stiff head wind. With Steve Monks flicking the gears into overdrive, scratch reeled in second scratch with 7 kilometres to go, then caught second limit with 3.5 kilometres to go, and finally limit surrendered with 2 kilometres to go.

On the hill into town, Steve Monks and Frank Kean got a break, but Sean Prins managed to pull everyone back together, but Monks and Kean attacked again and got clear this time, with Monks pulling away from Kean to win by about 4 seconds, with Sean Prins third.
