How the Race Unfolded.
Peter Mayo set off as the bunny for the rest of the field to catch, but was a bit below par and was only 1 minute 40 seconds ahead of the 14 minute bunch after 25km at the turn.
Geoff Richards and Frank Kean, both riding their first race after some time off the bike, helped propel the second scratch bunch to 36.6kph at the turn, still 1 minute 50 ahead of scratch (38.65kph) with about 18km to go.
The long drag back along the Sandbar Road was into a head wind, and scratch was only 40 seconds behind second scratch at the top of McCracken's hill with about 6km to go, but the last kilometers were with a tail wind which favoured the other bunches.
In the closing stages of the race, second scratch was closing on the second limit riders, and finally caught them with about 150 metres to go. Geoff Richards took out the sprint from Dean Hayward, who just edged out Laura White on the line. Les Dunn finished fourth.
Sean Prins took out fastest time 40 seconds later ahead of Wayne Klauss.
Geoff Richards - 1 hour 12 minutes 50 seconds
Average speed of 35.8kph
Sean Prins - 1 hour 09 minutes 20 seconds
Average speed of 37.6kph
