How the Race Unfolded.
Both the limit and middle bunches rode solidly, while the initial scratch and second scratch bunches were combined at the last minute due to cancellations, and proved hard to predict.
The result was the limit and middle bunches battled out the finish. With about 4 kilometers to go, the limit riders still lead by about a minute, and were still just ahead on the outskirts of Stawell at the base of the long climb up into Stawell. At the base of the climb, Meg Parnaby made a solo break and was not caught by the chasing middle bunch until the final turn up towards the finish, with less than a kilometer to go.
Drew Heard was not phased by the long climb, and was too strong for the others in the sprint, taking out the race from Dean Hayward and Tony Lloyd, with Meg Parnaby only about 10 seconds behind in fourth place.
Scratch finished several minutes behind, with Frank Kean sprinting clear up the hill to take fastest time from Edwin Irvine.
Drew Heard - 1 hour 26 minutes 38 seconds
Average speed of 34.97kph
Frank Kean - 1 hour 23 minutes 02 seconds
Average speed of 36.49kph
Very light south east to southerly - almost none at times.
