Frank Kean found the hilly course
to his liking last Sunday, taking out the Grampians
Vets A grade event.
Recent flood damage to the Greenhole
Road near Lake Lonsdale forced a change of route,
with riders tackling a 44 kilometre out and back course
along the hilly Sandbar Road.
Starting
on the Mount Drummond Road at the Western Highway,
riders proceeded along the Sandbar Road before turning
onto the Illawarra Road, turning just before the Halls
Gap road to return the way they had come.
A grade rider
Frank Kean launched an attack on the Sandbar Hill,
12 kilometres into the race, taking Peter Wemyss and
Dean Hayward with him, splitting the bunch into two.
With the three leaders working hard to maintain their
break, a concerted effort by Crystal Wemyss, Drew Heard
and Daryl Elliott failed to regain the lost ground
A solid pace up McCracken’s
Hill on the return journey dislodged Hayward, leaving
Frank Kean and Peter Wemyss to fight out the race.
Another attack by Kean over the final hills failed
to shake Wemyss, so the battle continued to the line.
In
the final sprint Kean was too strong, taking out the
race from Wemyss, with Hayward coming home third.
In
the B grade event, Geoff Richards powered the bunch
along for much of the race, but was outsprinted at
the end by Tony Lloyd. Richards was a close second
with Tom Eldridge third.
In the C grade event, Peter
Mayo got the better of Meg Parnaby on the line, with
Damian Rabl taking out third place.
