When conditions get tough then the tough get going and so it was at Polkemmit Road, near Horsham, last Sunday, when Peter Wemyss took out the Grampians Vets 54 kilometre Handicap.
A strong wind and open country made the going difficult, with limit riders Meg Parnaby, Les Power, Stuart King and Damian Rabl leading the field away off thirteen and a half minutes.
Next were the three minute riders Gerard O’Brien, Drew Heard, Daryl Elliott, Steve Monks and Tony Rathgeber. They battled hard until the 40 kilometre mark, when they were caught by the flying scratch riders Peter and Crystal Wemyss, Frank Kean, Wayne Klauss, and Gary Brumby.
When these two bunches combined, it spelled the end for the limit riders who were visible in the distance, but it still took another six kilometres for the whole field to come together.
In the final sprint, fitness showed out as Peter Wemyss pulled away to win by a few lengths from Gary Brumby, with Frank Kean third.
Peter Wemyss also recorded the fastest race time of one hour, twenty-four minutes and fifty seconds, and average speed of 38.2kph
