Mild, still conditions greeted riders for the 45 kilometre Quarry Road Handicap.
Meg Parnaby set off as the solo limit rider from the nineteen minute mark followed by the five and a half minute riders Stuart King, Gary Brumby, Gerard O’Brien and Richard Clark.
Next away was the three and a half minute bunch of Drew Heard, Wayne Klauss, Daryl Elliott and Crystal Wemyss, who were slowly but surely gaining on the bunch in front.
However, the scratch riders Dennis Kelly, Peter Wemyss, Danny Monaghan and Sean Prins once again set a cracking pace, and had the three and a half minute riders in their sights shortly before the half way point. Not long afterwards, these two bunches came together, and they set off after the five and a half minute bunch, which was still about thirty seconds in front.
Hitting the hills along the Sandbar road the catch came soon afterwards, with most riders surviving until the end of the Sandbar Road, when the field started to break up. Dennis Kelly, Peter Wemyss, Gary Brumby and Sean Prins broke clear and passed limit rider Meg Parnaby just before the Quarry Road hills.
Over the steep final hills nobody could stay with Kelly, who went on to win by nearly a minute from Peter Wemyss and Gary Brumby, with Sean Prins coming home fourth.
Kelly’s time was 1 hour 8 minutes 31 seconds.
