McIntyre Wins on Home Turf

Due to the regular Laharum course
being flooded, Grampians Vets tackled a makeshift 52km
course, from the Laharum silos out to the highway along
the Mt Zero road, then back past the silos to the Roses
Gap turnoff, before returning to the silos again.
A moderate westerly wind and an angry
magpie made life intersting, but didn’t
seem to daunt the limit riders Meg Parnaby and John
McIntyre, who rode off 13 minutes. They put their heads
down and butts up, and threw out the challenge to the
chasing riders to catch them.
The middle mark riders,
Tony Lloyd, Peter Parnaby, Tom Eldridge, Stuart King
and Damian Rabl, riding off 3 minutes, set a solid
pace to the first turn, and it looked like they would
reel in the limit markers at about the 35 or 40km mark.
However, the limit riders had other ideas, and a rather
casual approach by the 3 minute bunch didn’t
help, with several riders slowing down for some distance
while shedding gear past the finish line mid race,
then another stopped to stretch his back, and a couple
of episodes of kangeroo dodging, meant that the limit
riders never got closer than a distant speck on the
The scratch riders Alan Barnett and
Drew Heard were never in the race, and although they
made up some time early on with the aid of a visiting
rider who only rode part of the race, they then made
up little more time.
The limit riders won comfortably,
with McIntyre taking out the race from Meg Parnaby.
Tony Lloyd was the first of the chasing riders, taking
out third place, while Drew Heard recorded fastest
