McIntyre Wins on Home Turf
Laharum Handicap
Sunday 5th September 2010

Due to the regular Laharum course being flooded, Grampians Vets tackled a makeshift 52km course, from the Laharum silos out to the highway along the Mt Zero road, then back past the silos to the Roses Gap turnoff, before returning to the silos again.

A moderate westerly wind and an angry magpie made life intersting, but didn’t seem to daunt the limit riders Meg Parnaby and John McIntyre, who rode off 13 minutes. They put their heads down and butts up, and threw out the challenge to the chasing riders to catch them.

The middle mark riders, Tony Lloyd, Peter Parnaby, Tom Eldridge, Stuart King and Damian Rabl, riding off 3 minutes, set a solid pace to the first turn, and it looked like they would reel in the limit markers at about the 35 or 40km mark. However, the limit riders had other ideas, and a rather casual approach by the 3 minute bunch didn’t help, with several riders slowing down for some distance while shedding gear past the finish line mid race, then another stopped to stretch his back, and a couple of episodes of kangeroo dodging, meant that the limit riders never got closer than a distant speck on the horizon.

The scratch riders Alan Barnett and Drew Heard were never in the race, and although they made up some time early on with the aid of a visiting rider who only rode part of the race, they then made up little more time.

The limit riders won comfortably, with McIntyre taking out the race from Meg Parnaby. Tony Lloyd was the first of the chasing riders, taking out third place, while Drew Heard recorded fastest time.
