A glorious
autumn morning greeted Grampian veteran cyclists
as they arrived at Stawell race course to tackle
the Pomonal-Mokepilly 55km circuit.
Warm temperatures
and the absence of wind normally favour the front
markers, and Meg Parnaby and Bridget Lang set off
determined to make the most of their 18 minute 30sec
advantage.
They were
followed 7 minutes later by Dan Heard, with a further
5minute 30sec gap to Glenn Ford, Tony Lloyd, Shane
Clarke, Peter Mayo and Stuart King.
However,
it was the 3 minute bunch of Drew Heard, Gerard O’Brien,
Alan Barnett, Dean Hayward and Sean Prins who attacked
the course from the start, and had made good inroads
on the rest of the field approaching Pomonal, and then
on the return leg to Mokepilly.
This group
combined with the 5 minute 24sec markers approaching
Lake Fyans on the run home, and were able to safely
hold off the scratch bunch of Ian Blackie, Frank
Kean, Chris Scott and Harvey Lang, and ran down the
out markers with less than 2km to ride.
Sean Prins
launched a bid for victory inside the last kilometre,
but was caught near the line, with Heard taking out
the sprint from Hayward and King.
Frank Kean
took fastest time of 1 hour 24 minutes.
