With many
Vets racing the day before in the Ivan Howes Memorial,
only a small field turned out for the 44km Fyans
Creek Handicap.
Meg Parnaby
and Peter Mayo set off from 12 minutes, enjoying
the calm conditions which were ideal for racing.
Riding
off 4 minutes, Alan Barnett, Shane Clark and Drew
Heard rode hard and caught the limit riders with
about 10 kilometres to go.
Further
back, the scratch riders were in trouble after Chris
Scott punctured at about the half way mark, leaving
Dean Hayward and visiting Bendigo rider Paul Volk
with an impossible task to haul in the other riders.
The
finish came down to a charge from a long way out,
ideal conditions for Drew Heard, who outlasted (out
blasted!) the rest to take first place, ahead
of Peter Mayo and Shane Clarke.
Paul
Volk recorded the fastest time of the day with 1
hour 12 minutes 10 seconds.
