Club Races
Shauna
Rides to Solo Victory
Quarry Road - Sunday 3rd
February 2008
Shauna Heard showed the rest
of the field a clean set of heels (wheels?) to comfortably
win last Sunday’s
Grampians Veterans event.
Cyclists competed over the
46km Mt Drummond/Lake Lonsdale circuit, and faced a
strong South Easterly wind in addition to the hills
that this course is noted for.

Fifteen riders faced
the starter, with Les Power and Shauna Heard being
first away off 19 minutes. Heard proved to be too strong
for a not so fit Power, and soon moved away to ride
solo.
The 12 minute bunch of Leon Gibson,
Tom Eldridge and Frank Stokes set off in pursuit with
Gibson and Eldridge combining well.
They were followed by the
6 minute second scratch group of Jamie Bennett, Drew
Heard, Allan Barnett and Stuart King.
This group eventually
reeled in the 12 minute bunch on the hills 4km from
the finish. The scratch bunch of Ian Blackie, Frank
Kean and Daryl Elliot chased hard all day, just failing
to bridge the gap to the combined bunches.
But out
front Shauna Heard was riding a great solo race, crossing
the line over a minute clear of the next rider, and
averaging over 30kph in the tough conditions.
The sprint
for second saw Jamie Bennett emerge from the bunch
with Allan Barnett third. The scratch bunch picked
up fastest time of 1hr 13 min with time officially
going to Ian Blackie.
