A fresh Westerly made for tough riding
conditions as the Grampians Vets cyclists tackled the
47km Quarry Road circuit last Sunday.
With the race
starting and finishing from Mount Drummond Road, the
lone limit rider David Cariss found the hilly start
and adverse winds a little tough to handle, and was
caught by the 9 minute riders Frank Stokes, Les Power,
Shauna Heard and Meg Parnaby soon after the Mount Dryden
turn.
Six minute riders Peter Mayo and
Tony Lloyd also struggled against the wind, and were
caught by 2 and a half minute riders Keiran Hogan and
Peter Parnaby at about the 30km mark, after loosing
Gerard O’Brien
to a puncture some kilometres before the catch.
These
four riders then combined to reel in the leading group
with about 10km to go, picking up some of the 9 minute
riders as they went past.
Meanwhile the scratch riders
Alan Barnett, Tim Schneider, Drew Heard and Frank Kean
were making up ground at a steady pace, and finally
caught the leading bunch on the first of the steep
Mount Drummond Road hills, with about 4km to go.
Tony
Lloyd led out the final sprint, but was soon passed
by Tim Schneider with Frank Kean on his wheel. Kean
just managed to edge past Schneider to claim victory
and also fastest race time of 1 hour 14 minutes. Schneider
finished second with Tony Lloyd third.
