Grampians Vets added a little variation
to the normal routine last Sunday, when they held a
short teams time trial followed by graded scratch races
at Fyans Creek Road, near Halls Gap.
The day started
out ominously with very strong winds blowing from the
South, but fortunately the Fyans Creek Road area is
relatively sheltered by trees, so the time trial was
not affected too badly.
However, the scratch races
that followed were buffeted by strong cross winds at
times.
Riders were divided up into 3 teams
of 4 to five riders. Each team rode out to Mt Dryden,
then two riders turned around and returned, while the
others in the team waited a minute, then returned as
a second separate group. Confused? Well, put it this
way, three teams rode out, 6 separate teams rode back.
Alan
Barnett and Dean Hayward were the winning team of the
first group back, while Peter and Meg Parnaby were
the fastest of the second group back.
Then riders lines
up for 44km graded scratch races, with Gerard O’Brien,
Drew Heard, Frank Kean, Alan Barnett and Dean Hayward
in A Grade. Stuart King, Peter Parnaby, Tom Eldridge,
Tony Lloyd and Steve Monks lined up as B Grade, while
Meg Parnaby, Frank Stokes, Cliff Dudley and Les Power
were in C Grade.
Drew Heard claimed a very narrow victory
in the A Grade section, ahead of Frank Kean. Steve
Monks finished ahead of Stuart King in B Grade, while
Les Power was first across the line ahead of Frank
Stokes in C Grade.
