Boy takes the Cake!
- Sunday 30th September 07
A small field of 9 dedicated riders rolled up for
the Polkemmet Rd 52km handicap, to be greeted by the
usual gentle breezes that the Polkemmet Road circuit
is renown for.
The race saw the return of Tom Eldridge
after some time off, and he along with Les Power and
Meg Parnaby made up the limit group of riders, starting
from 13 minutes. They disappeared slowly into the 30
to 40kph head winds, to be followed by the middle bunch
of Peter Parnaby, Harvey Lang and guest rider young
Bazza King. Bringing up the rear were scratch riders
Alan Barnett, Stuart King and Drew Heard, who set off
2 minutes after the middle bunch.
The first two legs of the course
were straight into the wind, and the top speeds of
the bunches didn’t
really get much above 22 to 24 kph for most of the
By the halfway mark, the middle bunch still had not
sighted the limit riders, who were still riding strongly
together. The backmarkers were only several hundred
metres behind the middle bunch, which slowed up to
wait for them. Once united, they took off after the
limit group, but unfortunately for them, half their
number were already done in, so the gap was not coming
down too fast.
The limit riders went on to score a good victory,
with birthday boy Les Power taking out line honours
on his special day. Meg Parnaby crossed the line second
with Tom Eldridge third.
Meanwhile the united scratch bunch
and middle riders were hitting speeds up to 60kph through
some good bursts of speed (no, the strong tail wind
had nothing to do with it, it was just sheer power!!!)
from Alan Barnett and Peter Parnaby, but still only
managed to come in a full minute and a half after the
limit riders. Alan Barnett crossed the line first from
this group to record the fastest time of the day.
