Monaghan Too Good in Sprint
Polkemmet Rd - Sunday 27th May 07

Chilly conditions greeted riders for the start of the 54km handicap, starting at Polkemmet Road, about 5km west of Horsham.

Limit riders Larry Bales, Kerryn Prouse, and Meg Parnaby headed off with a 14min 30sec start, but were caught by 10min riders Harvey Lang, Tania Walter and Ross Lumley at the Natimuk lake.

This group then combined to share the work on the homeward journey, much of the way into a reasonable strong northerly side to head wind.

With 10km to go, and all riders now on the return leg, all groups were within sight on the longer stretches. The 4min 30sec group of Tom Eldridge, Allan Barnett and Chris Scott were working hard to catch the lead group, and the scratch bunch of Daryl Elliott, Danny Monaghan, Richard Clark, Gerard O'Brien and Drew Heard were also closing in fast.

With about 8kms to go, all the groups merged, and formed a large bunch across the road. Unfortunately the wind was from the side at this stage, so those not able to work up front were left without shelter dangling on the back, so riders soon started to drop off.

Then the competition hotted up as O'Brien surged up one of the last major hills, leaving most riders out of the slip-stream and off the winning pace.  Only the scratch riders survived O'Brien's onslaught to eventually contest the sprint finish.

Drew Heard led out early with Danny Monaghan matching his moves, until Monaghan pulled clear to take lines honours and fastest race time of 1:27:30mins.  Second was Heard, followed by Elliott and O'Brien.
