A small field of 11 riders lined up
for the start of the 51 kilometre Glenorchy Lubeck
circuit in very chilly but dry conditions. A northerly
wind ranging from 10 to 20 kph meant the riders were
working into a side head wind for 2 sides of the triangular
course.
Larry Bales and Meg Parnaby were first
away on 17 minutes with Tony Lloyd, Peter Carter and
Harvey Lang 10 minutes behind them off 7 minutes.
Off
3 minutes, the second scratch bunch of Jamie Bennett,
Gerard O’Brien
and Alan Barnett were caught after about 30 kilometres
by scratch riders Ian Blackie, Drew Heard and Frank
Kean.
At the front of the race Larry and
Meg were working well together and were not caught
until 7 kilometres from home by the 7 minute bunch,
who were defying the handicapper with very strong riding.
This group continued together and it came down to a
sprint for the line with Tony Lloyd leading them out,
only to be overtaken by Harvey Lang who crossed first,
with Peter Carter second and Tony taking third.
The great improver over recent weeks, Larry
Bales, continued his run by out sprinting Meg Parbaby
for fourth place, a first ever.
Drew Heard took the honors in the
sprint when the scratch bunch finished giving him the
fastest time of 1 hour 18min 45 sec and an average speed
for the race of 39kph.
