Heard by a Wheel
Concongella - Monday 11th June 07

  Drew Heard

Horsham powerhouse Drew Heard judged his charge to perfection to clinch victory in the final few metres of the Grampians Veteran Cyling Club A grade scratch race, held on the Queen’s Birthday Holiday Monday.

A good field (considering it was a long weekend) of 16 riders fronted for the 47km A and B grade scratch races, held at Concongella.

Drew Heard, along with fellow riders Frank Kean, Daryl Elliott and Bruce Hamilton broke clear of the rest of the A grade field 10km into the race, then worked together for the next 37km to keep the other riders at bay. The other five A grade riders, Tony Lloyd, Harvey Lang, Mike Kelly, Tom Eldridge and Stewart King broke up soon afterwards into several groups, before regrouping to continue the chase.

However the leaders held their margin for most of the race, before increasing it slightly toward the end.

Bruce Hamilton lead out early in the final sprint, but ran out of legs just before the line, and Heard powered past him to snatch victory by a wheel, relegating Hamilton into second place. Drew’s time was 1hr 15min 19sec.

In the B grade event, all riders stayed together until Peter Carter, Ross Lumley, Tania Walter, Les Power and Frank Stokes broke clear with about 18km to go. This group worked well t

ogether until about 10km from home, when various attacks tried to reduce the field even more, but all riders survived to contest the finish.
